The Test of Orthographic Choice (TOC) tests a person’s written word recognition. In this test, the reader is shown two written items that sound the same (e.g., doar door). The reader has to choose which of the two items is spelled correctly. In order to select the right item, the reader needs to know the correct spelling, as sounding out the words will not help to provide the correct answer. The test is composed of 30 test items and two practice items.

At the end of the test, the tester scores each of the reader’s responses. The reader’s score can then be compared with that of individuals in the same year (grade) as the reader. The comparison should give an indication of the reader’s written word recognition relative to readers who have received similar amounts of reading instruction.
