Welcome to TERC

The Test of Everyday Reading Comprehension (TERC) tests how well a person understands what they read in everyday life. For example, is their reading good enough to order lunch from a canteen menu? Can they read the instructions on a medicine bottle well enough to take the right number of tablets?

The test is composed of 10 items that increase in difficulty. After each item has been presented, the reader is asked a question. The tester records the reader’s answer in a response box below the test item.

At the end of the test, the tester scores each of the reader’s responses. A results page is created that shows the reader’s overall score as well as a list showing the everyday reading tasks that the reader can and cannot do.
